Inhaler Technique
Correct inhaler technique is crucial for ensuring that medication is delivered effectively to the lungs. Patients should start by shaking the inhaler well and removing the cap. While standing or sitting upright, they should exhale gently to empty the lungs, then place the mouthpiece between their lips, ensuring a tight seal. As they begin to breathe in slowly and deeply, they should press down on the inhaler to release the medication, continuing to inhale steadily for 3 to 5 seconds. After holding their breath for around 10 seconds to allow the medication to settle, they can exhale slowly through the nose or mouth. Using a spacer can also enhance delivery, especially for those who struggle with coordination. Regularly reviewing and practising inhaler technique with a healthcare professional can significantly improve the effectiveness of asthma or COPD management.
