COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a lung condition that worsens over time, marked by persistent breathing problems and reduced airflow through the lungs.
It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Key causes are long-term exposure to harmful substances, mainly from smoking and pollution.
Common symptoms are a chronic cough, wheezing and shortness of breath, which can greatly affect daily life.
Spirometry with reversibility: key in diagnosing fixed airflow obstruction associated with COPD.
Spirometry reversibility involves blowing into a spirometer as hard and a fast as you can until your lungs feel empty. Depending on the outcome of the baseline spirometry tests, you may then be given some inhaled bronchodilator therapy which is designed to open the airways. You will then wait approximately 20 minutes before you repeat the process to see if your lung function has improved with the inhaled medication.
Carbon monoxide transfer Factor:
We also offer advanced carbon monoxide transfer factor testing which although not essential for diagnosis of COPD, gives a more detailed picture of your lung function as it measures how well your lungs can transfer oxygen - the key job of our lungs. This test is normally only available in hospitals.
Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for slowing the disease's progress and improving health. Treatment may include medications such as inhalers to relax and open the airways, rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes to help patients manage their condition and improve lung function.
