Spirometry & Reversibility
Spirometry with reversibility is an important test to evaluate lung function and the impact of bronchodilator inhaled treatment in patients with breathing issues.
The tests consists of baseline spirometry measurements followed by administration of a bronchodilator inhaler and repeating spirometry again. The initial results are compared to the post results after taking a bronchodilator medication.
If there is a significant improvement in lung function after using the bronchodilator, it suggests bronchial responsiveness, commonly linked to conditions like asthma. This test is essential in the diagnosis fixed and reversible airway obstructions that are indicative of asthma and COPD.

STEP 1
Your physiologist will take a detailed medical history, which will include your current symptoms, any previous health issues, and the medications you are currently taking. This ensures that a complete understanding of your health status is obtained.
-
STEP 2
You will need to answer some questions to confirm you are fit for testing. This questionnaire will be emailed to you with your booking confirmation and again on the day of testing to check for any changes.
-
STEP 3
Your physiologist will then take several measurements, including your height, weight, body mass index (BMI), oxygen saturation levels, heart rate, and blood pressure. These assessments are essential for gaining a comprehensive understanding of your overall health and lung function.
-
STEP 4
The physiologist will then thoroughly explain the various tests that will be conducted and demonstrate the correct technique to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the results.
-
STEP 5
You will be required to perform baseline spirometry measurements which involves blowing out slowly and forcefully until your lungs are empty. A minimum of three technically acceptable and repeatable results need to be obtained.
-
STEP 6
If there is airflow obstruction evident on baseline spirometry you will be required to take some inhaled bronchodilator medication through a special device called an aerochamber. You will then relax for 20 minutes for the medication to take effect.
-
STEP 7
After 20 minutes you will be required to repeat the spirometry testing until three technically acceptable and repeatable efforts are obtained.
-
STEP 8
Your results will be reported on within 48 hours and sent to the clinician that referred you. The results will help your doctor, nurse, or consultant make an accurate diagnosis. You will receive the results during your follow up consultation.
